AMD introduced the phenom II X3 720 Black edition processor to compete with the intel core 2 duo E8400.The Socket AM3 Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition is a 45nm quad-core Phenom CPU with AMD64 technology, and 2.8GHz processor frequency. Features 1 16-bit/16-bit HyperTransport 3.0 link (up to 3600MT/s system bus full duplex, 16GB/s I/O bandwidth), 2MB L2 cache (512KB per core), and 6MB shared L3 cache. Direct Connect Architecture allows for integrated DDR2 memory controller (up to 17.1GB/s dual channel memory bandwidth). Up to PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066MHz) and PC3 (DDR3-1333MHz) memory support. AMD is betting that having a third core, the Phenom II X720 Black Edition will be able to overcome the advantage of a 200MHz higher clock rate, and the 50% greater integer instruction issue rate.
The current prices are:
- $145 Phenom II X3 720 is available at $145
- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 costs about $165
The Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition is multiplier unlocked - and as such, overclocking it is much easier than the locked processors. It was pretty easy getting it up to about 3.4GHz - I just had to increase the multiplier to 17 - but it took a bit of Vcore tweaking to reach the maximum clock speed of 3.7GHz that I achieved with air cooling. It was really simple to overclock, and that is one of the major strengths of this chip.
While considering the power consumption, the E8400 uses 26W less at idle, and 41W less loaded.AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition is far better than the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400.
