Intel, the world's largest processor manufacturers has announced its first six-core microprocessor - Intel Core i7-980X. This new hexa-core processor is also named as Gulftown chip. It supports Intel Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost technologies.
This Intel Core i7-980X features 12MB smart cache and is clocked at 3.33GHz. It integrates DDR3-1066MHz memory controller supporting triple channel mode. With active 6-cores, this processor has the capability to handle workload of 12 computing threads. Intel X58 Express Chipset based motherboard would be the best suitor for this CPU, albeit with an updated BIOS version.
New Core i7-980X had 50 percent more cores than the Core i7-975 quad-core processor with 8MB cache. The new Core i7-980X shares the same LGA 1366 socket with the current top performer quad-core Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition. The interesting part here is that Core 7-980X and Core i7-975 have the same Thermal Design Power rating of 130W. So, it makes sense for any power user to go for the former CPU.
This new Intel Core i7-980X, aimed for top level performance is mainly targeting power users and high performance computing seekers. This new hexa-core processor is standing head-to-head with Core i7-975 in terms of price, with $1,000 per thousand chips tray.
This new Intel Core i7-980X may get available in the global market in the near future itself.
