AMD announced their latest desktop microarchitectures at the 2009 Financial Analyst Day. These MicroArchitectures are codenamed as Bulldozer and Bobcat. AMD says that desktop based on these architectures will be available by 2011. AMD also provided more details bout this new architectures at the 2009 Financial Analyst Day.
The new Desktop architecture, Bulldozer will be based on 32nm silicon die and will feature 4-8 cores based Zambezi processors for Scorius platform. Zambezi Processor chips will support Socket AM3 and also DDR3 memory while Scorius platform offers new socket, chipsets and also support for 32nm Radeon HD 6000 series graphics chips. Bulldozer Architecture offers Multithreading feature so that single core would appear as two cores for the operating system. Other features include Lynx platform, DDR3 and DirectX 11 GPU support.
The other desktop MicroArchitectre, is for competing with Intel Atom's successor Medfield SoC solution and VIA's Nano series processors. Bobcat is the microarchitecture AMD is aiming for the System-on-Chip mobile and portables segment. This is designed for ultraportable and netbook segments. Bobcat microarchitecture is boasted for scaling down to less than one watt power.
Bobcat microarchitecture is slightly bigger than Atom but the performance is better with the new Bobcat microarchitecture.
