Intel Inside Your Phone

Digg it !!!

WHAT'S NEW IN EMBEDDED PROCESSING

There's a showdown coming in the mobile processor world. On one side is ARM,the longtime leader and master of power efficiency. Nokia,Tl,Marvell, and Qualcomm all churn out compelling new processors based on ARM's architecture. But now intel's back in the game with it's "Moorestown" platform, claiming that it's x86 instruction set is easier to program for than the ARM instruction set used in handhelds.

Intel will be pushing its Moorestown chips for a new generation of handheld computers with screens ranging in size from 4 to 7 inches, like pumpedup iphones.ARM,meanwhile,is touting even lower power consumption on the new multicore cortex-A9 platform, with its embedded, hardware-based java and 3D graphics acceleration.Handhelds have to do more in their main chipsetsthan desktops and laptops do.We therefore expect to see makers optimizing future chipsets for such cutting edge wireless technologies as cognitive radio and virtual antenna networks, keeping the handheld and desktop/laptopchip spaces seperate. We will still be using different chipsets with different development paths in handheld and desktop/laptop.There won,t be some magical merging with centrino in everything.

Handheld chip designers have the same performance challengers as desktop designers;they just adapt to them more slowly because their chips can't be large or hot.The handheld world also faces the same fabrication issues that we're seeing in the PC worls,in terms of making chips smaller, faster, and denser.Mobile chip makers are currently at 65nm,headed to 45nm by the end of 2008,and moving to 32 nm after that. What's past 32 nm?They are still figuring that out.
Review
I think this will be HUGE. Lot of people talk about the Moorestown platform this year and I've heard about this as the iPhone killer, or next generation iPhone. The game changer is size, the processing power, and WiMax capabilities. This is much more than anything in the market now. It can be almost anything you need it to be, and what you want it to do might be more about what devices it talks to.
Unlike the iphone with this device you should be able to add and download applications and be configure much what you want it to do. It hss the size of a remote. It has bluetooth and WiMax.This be will run on Intel’s next generation 45nm chips. It should far exceed anything any hand held game system can do today. You could host games on the fly with people near you or host over the Internet. I actually believe this could be an XBox Killer.
We can say it as a desktop killer. It should have the horsepower and have highspeed connections and a full blown browser. You could ultimately have any data or any application on a powerful mobile device on your hip, in your pocket or in your purse.i think's that Moorestown is shaping up to be the ubiquitous everything device.
